Hey Reader, Let me take you back a few years… I was just starting to really dive into lighting. At the time, I LOOOOVED using natural light for my food photography, but I knew that wasn’t always an option. I wanted to get comfortable with using my speedlight, but honestly I didn’t trust myself to make it look natural yet. One day, I was shooting a recipe for my blog, and instead of sticking with just natural light, I thought, "Let’s see if I can make my speedlight work." So, here's what I did: I took a shot with the natural light, the one that I felt was soft and beautiful and just right. And it was something I was comfortable with. Then, I swapped to my speedlight and went to work. I played with it, adjusted it, and kept tweaking until it looked almost identical to the natural light shot. Take a look at these two photos and see if you can spot which one was shot in natural light and which one with my speedlight. Here’s what I learned in my little experiment… With enough practice and a little patience, you can make artificial light feel just like daylight. 🌞 It wasn’t perfect at first. There were some trial-and-error moments, but the more I worked with it, the more I realized that artificial light could give me even more control over how I shaped my photos—without losing that soft, natural feel. The lesson? If you want to make artificial light look natural, you have to really understand how to manipulate it—diffuse it, bounce it, shape it. Once you’ve got control over the direction and intensity of your light, you can get that same natural vibe, whether you’re working with the sun or a speedlight. Now, I teach others how to do exactly this—because once you understand how to control your light, it opens up a whole new world for your photos. Want to learn how to do this too? I’m offering my Artificial Light For Beginners Workshop Recording, because I’d love to show you how to create beautiful, natural-looking photos using only artificial light.
