The $200 setup that’ll change your food photos

Hey Reader,

I wanna share my artificial light beginnings with you, and as much of a struggle they were it all led to now working 90% of the time with artificial light 😅

The first time I tried using flash for food photography, I was so sure I’d nail it. I set everything up, hit the shutter, checked the back of my camera, and…

It looked like my food was being interrogated 🙊 Harsh shadows, weird highlights

I thought, Maybe I just need MORE softboxes and lights? So I went shopping. But guess what? It didn’t fix anything

But when I stripped everything back and focused on using simple gear, but knowing exactly how to use it

⬇️ See the difference for yourself! ⬇️

How to Get Natural-Looking Light (for Less Than $200!)

Use a simple diffuser: Even a cheap translucent shower curtain works, but I love the foldables and they are not expansive at all. (If you’re just starting out, I’d start with soft light, not hard light!)

Position the light to best work for your scene: Angle and distance make all the difference (knowing this is KEY!)

Bounce the light back using a foam board reflector (super cheap, but works magic!).

Use an affordable off-camera flash: No need for high-end gear at this point. alternatively you can use continuos light as well, there are affordables out there.

The right photo above was created in this exact way - one flash, one diffuser and one foam box reflector.

With just these few steps, you can create soft, natural-looking light, you don’t need expensive softbox, no crazy setup, and no waiting for sunlight.

I break it all down step by step in my Artificial Light for Beginners workshop recording, so you can skip the struggle and start getting pro-level food shots with just one light.
